Additional Details about Operational Changes

March 11, 2020

I write to follow up with additional details about imminent changes to University operations resulting from the coronavirus/COVID-19, which President Ryan described in his email to all of you earlier today. Please read carefully so you are aware of what you need to do as we work together to mitigate the impacts of the coronavirus on our community.

We are asking all students, if at all possible, to remain at home or return to your home for the foreseeable future as our academic program moves online. This is true regardless of whether you live in on-Grounds housing or elsewhere, including in fraternities and sororities.

Important: We appeal to you, in light of your responsibility as a University citizen, not to return to Grounds if you meet any of the CDC guidance for exposure to the coronavirus. This includes recent travel to a CDC Level 2 or 3 affected area, exposure to someone who has been diagnosed with COVID-19 or is suspected to have had exposure to the virus, or if you are experiencing symptoms (fever, cough, or difficulty breathing).

If you are currently receiving financial aid and have questions related to financial resources for departing Grounds, please contact UVA Student Financial Services at or 434-982-6000.

More specifics:

If you live in on-Grounds housing, you shortly will be receiving a message from Housing & Residence Life with details about next steps. Please be on the lookout for this email, which contains important information.

Please also remember that President Ryan's guidance encouraging students to stay at home or return home applies to students living off Grounds as well.

If you currently have a UVA Dining plan, please continue to check the UVA Dining website for updates. Dining services likely will be tapered as we assess current needs based on the number of dining-plan students remaining here.

Like UVA Dining, University Transit services will be tapering, with a priority placed on services for faculty, graduate student instructors, and staff, and in particular Hospital physicians, nurses, and other staff.

Other Services
University Libraries and other services, such as IM-Rec facilities, will operate with reduced hours. Check the Coronavirus website for updated details.

We fully recognize the challenge all these changes impose. Should you need support through Counseling and Psychological Services, those services are available to you as usual, both on site and remotely. You may call CAPS at 434-243-5150, 24 hours a day.

Student Workers
If you are employed as a student worker, please communicate with your supervisor about your plans.

More Details
I know many of you may be fourth-years or graduate students anticipating a May 2020 graduation on the Lawn. Please know we are mindful of this and will provide updates in the coming weeks, based on the best available knowledge. Having walked the Lawn as a UVA graduate, I recognize the importance of this ceremony to many of you. It's simply too early at this point to make any firm decisions.

If you have questions about other areas beyond those listed here, please know we are addressing them as quickly as possible.

This is a very fluid situation that is evolving daily, and we ask for your patience during this critical time. Please know we are prioritizing students' needs in every possible way.

This is an unusual time not just for us, but for the country and the entire world. Thank you for your close attention to these requests and for pulling together as a community. We remain in service to you during this time.
