Following his time at the University, Dean Rucker assumed the role of Associate Dean of Student Activities at his alma mater, the University of Mary Washington ('81). During his tenure at the University of Mary Washington, he served as their Associate Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Student Life until his retirement in June 2022. In recognition of his exceptional service, the University Center at Mary Washington was renamed the "Cedric Rucker University Center" by their Board of Visitors.

Dean Rucker's academic journey includes a B.A. in Sociology from Mary Washington College ('81) and an M.A. and Doctoral Study in Sociology from the University of Virginia ('86-'89). His research focus includes organizations and institutions, religious movements, family, and education. He also participated in a Foreign Study Exchange in Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay, exploring educational exchange in language, culture, economics, government, education, and geography.

Dean Rucker's dedication to student development extends beyond his administrative roles. He served as an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Sociology and the Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies program at the University of Mary Washington, where he passionately taught various courses, including Principles of Sociology, American Society, Multicultural Education, Ethnic Studies, and Perspectives in Sexualities: Queer Studies.

Rucker was appointed to serve the Commonwealth as a member of the Board of Medicine, the Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB) and the House Ethics Advisory Panel for the House of Delegates of the General Assembly. He has been recognized with numerous awards and honors for his outstanding contributions, including the Richmond Public Schools "Living Legacy Award" and the University of Mary Washington's "Eagle Beyond Compare Award."

Although he was confirmed to join the Peace Corps for two years after retirement, the opportunity to play a supportive role for our students was too appealing to pass up.
